Apple's first foldable is real, priced, and dated: $1,999 for 256GB, pre-orders open October 16, and it ships October 23. The crease can still be felt but is barely visible even at an angle. Apple dropped Face ID for Touch ID. And within hours of the keynote, Samsung's social team was already trolling the launch.
Neither phone has been tested hands-on by DopamineKart -- what's below is real, sourced from Apple's and Samsung's own announcements plus the outlets who got early access, not guessed or invented.

Apple's pitch is the ecosystem and fold-aware software. Samsung's pitch is seven years of foldable refinement, a stylus, and a $100 lower price. Both are real strategies, not marketing spin.

CHAPTER 01
The iPhone Duo's 7.6-inch inner display becomes a 5.4-inch outer panel when folded closed, both with a nano-texture coating -- the same finish used on Apple's nano-texture Mac and iPad screens. It's paired with the A20 Pro chip, Apple's C2 modem, and a dual-battery system split across both halves of the hinge.
iOS 27 adds Split View multitasking, hands-free FaceTime, and a chargerless StandBy mode built specifically for the fold.
Samsung's Z Fold 8 splits into two shapes this year -- a new "passport-style" wide screen, or the Ultra's taller, familiar Fold shape with S Pen support.
CHAPTER 02
Apple's approach combines a multi-bar hinge mechanism with the nano-texture coating, repurposed to diffuse light and make the crease harder to see rather than eliminate it outright. Early hands-on impressions are consistent: the crease can still be felt running a finger across the display, but reviewers say it's barely visible even at an angle.
Samsung showed a crease-free display at CES 2026. Side-by-side comparisons at Duo's launch describe both phones performing similarly head-on, differing only when tilted toward light.
Apple dropped Face ID on the Duo for Touch ID -- a hardware tradeoff tied to the phone's two very different postures, folded and open. Samsung's Fold line has offered both face unlock and fingerprint for several generations.

CHAPTER 05
The Duo pairs a 48MP Fusion main camera (f/1.6) with a 48MP ultra-wide (f/2.2). Its main sensor measures 1/1.28 inches -- physically larger than Samsung's 1/1.56-inch sensor on the Z Fold 8's 50MP wide camera. Front cameras differ too: the Duo uses a 12MP Center Stage camera outside plus a separate under-display FaceTime camera inside, where the Z Fold 8 uses the same 10MP sensor on both displays.
CHAPTER 06 · THE AD WAR
Samsung's social accounts responded within hours of Apple's keynote. Duolingo's owl reportedly jumped into the exchange too. Samsung's posts alone reportedly cleared a million impressions.

Apple and Samsung have traded public jabs for well over a decade while remaining supply-chain partners behind the scenes. Apple's own history here isn't spotless: its 2024 "Crush" iPad ad drew its own backlash and a rare public apology.
The Legit Verdict
There's no single winner here -- there's a real fork in priorities. The Duo leads on ecosystem integration and fold-aware software, at a $100 premium, with a camera system that's a real step down from Apple's own Pro-tier phones. The Z Fold 8 leads on price, shape choice, and seven years of foldable-hardware maturity; the Ultra adds a stylus neither Apple phone offers. Neither has been hands-on tested here -- this is what's real and confirmed, not a verdict on how either actually feels to use.
