Quick take

  • The EV3 is Kia's smallest and most affordable EV, positioned as the brand's entry point into electric ownership.
  • Two battery options: a 58.3 kWh pack on the base Light trim, and an 81.4 kWh long-range pack on Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT — up to 321 miles of EPA-estimated range on the Wind FWD and Land FWD trims.
  • Built on Kia's 400V E-GMP platform, the same underpinnings as the EV6 and EV9, with "Opposites United" design language borrowed from the larger EV9.
  • Five trims — Light, Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT — with pricing (MSRP, before destination) starting at $29,890 and topping out at $45,890 for the 288-hp GT AWD.

Kia has sold electric vehicles in the U.S. for years, but never a genuinely cheap one — the EV6 starts in the mid-$40,000s and the three-row EV9 well north of that. The EV3 is Kia's answer to that gap: a compact electric SUV that undercuts both by a wide margin while still carrying over the "Opposites United" design language, the 400V E-GMP platform, and most of the technology from Kia's larger EVs. Production started at Kia's plant in Pesquería, Nuevo León, Mexico on August 4, 2026, and Kia announced U.S. pricing on August 12, 2026, ahead of a late-2026 on-sale date. Eric Watson, Kia America's vice president of sales operations, called it "a bold step forward in our commitment to making electric mobility accessible to more Americans."

The affordable-EV story, with a real number behind it

The headline figure is pricing: Kia lists the base Light FWD trim at $29,890 (MSRP, before a $1,495 destination charge), which makes the EV3 the cheapest EV in Kia's U.S. lineup by a wide margin. That trim pairs a 58.3 kWh battery with a single front motor for an EPA-estimated 220-mile range. Buyers who want the bigger 81.4 kWh pack and up to 321 miles of range move up to the Wind FWD trim, priced at $34,990 — still comfortably below where Kia's EV6 starts. This is a market-positioning fact, not a sale: DopamineKart is not referencing a discount, promotion, or limited-time offer of any kind, only Kia's own published starting prices.

SpecFigure
Light FWD$29,890 · 58.3 kWh · ~220 mi EPA-est.
Wind FWD$34,990 · 81.4 kWh · up to 321 mi EPA-est.
Land FWD$38,490 · 81.4 kWh · up to 321 mi EPA-est.
GT-Line AWD$43,490 · 81.4 kWh · 261 hp / 284 lb-ft
GT AWD$45,890 · 81.4 kWh · 288 hp / 345 lb-ft

Prices are Kia-published MSRP, excluding a $1,495 destination charge. AWD is a $3,200 option on Wind and Land.

One motor, or two — and a real jump in power

Every FWD EV3 uses a single front motor rated at 201 hp and 209 lb-ft of torque. Stepping up to AWD adds a second rear motor: Wind, Land, and GT-Line AWD trims make 261 hp and 284 lb-ft combined, while the range-topping GT AWD is tuned further to 288 hp and 345 lb-ft. Both batteries charge quickly on the EV3's native NACS port — Kia rates the smaller 58.3 kWh pack at roughly 29 minutes for a 10-80% DC fast charge on a 350kW charger, with the larger 81.4 kWh pack taking about 31 minutes. No adapter is needed to use Tesla Supercharger stations, and the EV3 supports Plug and Charge for tap-free billing at compatible stalls.

Underneath, the EV3 rides on Kia's 400V E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) architecture — the same basic electrical architecture that underpins the EV6 and the three-row EV9, scaled down to a wheelbase of 105.5 inches. Overall length runs 169.3 inches on Light, Wind, and Land trims and 169.7 inches on GT-Line and GT, with a consistent 72.8-inch width and a height of roughly 62 to 63 inches depending on trim and roof equipment. Ground clearance is a modest 5.9 to 6.2 inches, in keeping with the EV3's role as a street-and-highway commuter rather than an off-road-oriented SUV. Cargo space measures 21.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 56.5 cubic feet with them folded down, plus a small front trunk. Curb weight ranges from roughly 3,836 lbs for the lightest FWD Light trim up to about 4,453 lbs for a fully equipped AWD model.

Trims and how they break down

Entry

Light (FWD)

58.3 kWh battery, 201 hp, ~220-mile EPA-est. range. Kia's cheapest EV at $29,890.

Volume pick

Wind (FWD or AWD)

Steps up to the 81.4 kWh pack and up to 321 miles of range in FWD form; AWD adds a rear motor for 261 hp.

Mid

Land (FWD or AWD)

Adds comfort and tech equipment on top of Wind, with the same battery and range options.

Sport-styled

GT-Line (AWD)

Standard AWD, 261 hp, and GT-inspired styling cues without the full GT powertrain.

Range-topper

GT (AWD)

The most powerful EV3, at 288 hp and 345 lb-ft, topping the lineup at $45,890.

Design borrowed from the EV9, shrunk down

Kia describes the EV3's look as sharing the "Opposites United" design philosophy with the EV6 and EV9 — boxy, upright proportions, a Star Map daytime running light signature, hidden rear door handles, and flush roof rails, all wrapped around a claimed 0.275 drag coefficient. It's a smaller, tauter reading of the same visual language Kia has used to differentiate its EVs from its gas-powered lineup, and in profile the EV3 reads as a distinctly scaled-down EV9 rather than an EV-converted version of an existing gas model.

Inside, Kia carries over its Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC), pairing dual 12.3-inch displays for instrumentation and infotainment. The EV3 also gets i-Pedal 3.0 one-pedal regenerative driving, standard Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) power output for running external devices off the battery, an optional Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) setup on top of that, Digital Key 2.0 smartphone unlocking, and streaming apps including Netflix and YouTube through Kia's Entertainment and Data Services.

Common questions

When does the Kia EV3 go on sale in the U.S.?

Kia is targeting late 2026. Production began at Kia's Pesquería, Nuevo León, plant in Mexico on August 4, 2026, and Kia announced U.S. pricing on August 12, 2026.

How much does the Kia EV3 cost?

Kia's published MSRP (before a $1,495 destination charge) starts at $29,890 for the base Light FWD trim and rises to $45,890 for the range-topping GT AWD. This is a factual pricing reference, not a discount or promotional claim.

How far can the Kia EV3 go on a charge?

Up to 321 miles of EPA-estimated range on the Wind FWD and Land FWD trims with the 81.4 kWh battery. The base Light trim, with a smaller 58.3 kWh battery, is estimated at roughly 220 miles.

Is the Kia EV3 available with all-wheel drive?

Yes. Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT trims offer AWD via a second rear motor, with output ranging from 261 hp to 288 hp on the GT.

The takeaway

Kia has talked about an affordable EV for years; the EV3 is the one that actually shows up, with a real Kia-published starting price, a production line already running, and a launch window measured in months rather than a vague "eventually." It borrows the styling and platform DNA of the pricier EV9 without pretending to be a stripped-down version of it — the base Light trim is a genuine value play, and the 321-mile Wind and Land trims look like the sweet spot for buyers who want real day-to-day range without stepping up to GT-Line or GT pricing. The catch is the usual one for any new nameplate: Kia's own on-sale window is still "late 2026" rather than a firm date, so exactly how long U.S. buyers wait for cars on dealer lots remains open.
