Brown cardigan over denim shorts
The most useful combination there is, and the cheapest to assemble: a summer bottom with a genuine knit over it. The cardigan buttons. That single fact is what separates this from a sweater tied around a waist.

Is it good?
Yes, for a boring reason: the proportions are correct. A button-front cardigan ends at the hip, which is where a denim short wants a horizontal line. Put a longer knit on this and you lose the leg. The brown against indigo is doing more than people credit — it warms the denim, which is the whole visual argument for September.

Would I pay for it?
For the cardigan, yes — it's the piece doing all the work and it's the cheapest thing here. The shorts are the Abercrombie tax and I'd wear ones I own. The cropped jacket in the same look is redundant; you're layering a layer.
