Excel is table stakes. Judgment is the job.
You need accounting fluency, financial statements, valuation logic and spreadsheet speed. You also need to write a clean email, explain a recommendation, catch an inconsistency and say what you do not know. CFA Institute groups finance careers into quantitative, client-facing and transaction-focused paths; that is a better starting point than chasing the loudest title.
The fastest way to look junior is to use jargon before understanding the decision underneath it. Learn why the model exists, who will rely on it and what could make it wrong.

Dress like you notice context—not like you bought a costume.
“Finance bro” style is mostly risk management: clean lines, quiet colors, reliable shoes, a bag that fits the commute and clothes that do not become a topic. The sister version does not require copying menswear or performing luxury. Read the room: trading floor, client meeting, fintech office and private-wealth lunch have different uniforms.
The better flex is preparation. Know the company, arrive with a point of view, keep your promises and make the team’s work easier. A conspicuous watch cannot rescue a broken model.
