One box under the TV versus two boxes on either side of the room. The real tradeoff isn't just sound quality — it's what each one is actually engineered to do well.

Modern flatscreen TVs are thin, and thin TVs have almost no room for speakers that can move real air. A soundbar exists to fix exactly that problem — it's a single enclosure, roughly TV-width, packed with multiple small drivers firing in different directions to simulate width and, in higher-end models, height.
Sonos's Arc Ultra is a useful example of how far this has come: the company lists 15 Class-D amplifiers, nine tweeters (two of them firing upward for genuine height-channel spatial audio), six midwoofers, and a single "Sound Motion" woofer module — all inside one enclosure under 3 inches tall. That's real engineering aimed at approximating a multi-speaker surround setup from a single unit, not a gimmick.
Bookshelf (or "standmount") speakers take the opposite approach: two separate, passive or powered enclosures, physically apart, each reproducing a full stereo channel independently. The tradeoff for that added complexity is genuine stereo imaging — the sense that instruments and voices exist at specific points in space between the speakers — which a single compact soundbar enclosure, no matter how many drivers it packs in, has to simulate rather than physically reproduce.
Powered bookshelf speakers — models with a built-in amplifier, like Klipsch's The Fives — have closed some of the setup-complexity gap with soundbars. You still need two physically separate boxes and a bit more cable planning, but you no longer need a separate receiver.
This is the least debatable part of the comparison. A soundbar plugs into the TV over HDMI or optical, and that's functionally the entire installation. Sonos states its Arc Ultra setup process as plugging in power, connecting HDMI, and completing configuration through an app — a process most people can finish in minutes without touching a manual.
Bookshelf speakers need, at minimum, speaker wire runs to both units and either a receiver or (for powered models) a single power connection plus a source cable. It's not difficult, but it's meaningfully more involved than a soundbar, and it requires committing to speaker placement in a way a soundbar — which just sits under the TV — doesn't.
For movies and TV dialogue, a good soundbar with real spatial audio processing (Dolby Atmos support, upward-firing drivers, AI-based speech enhancement) can genuinely compete with — and in convenience terms, beat — a basic stereo bookshelf setup, because dialogue clarity and surround placement are exactly what soundbar engineering optimizes for.
For music, physical stereo separation still tends to matter more than driver count. Two speakers placed several feet apart create a wider, more accurate soundstage than any single-enclosure array can fully simulate, which is why serious music listeners have historically preferred separated stereo pairs over integrated soundbars — even sophisticated ones.

The most common real-world answer isn't "pick one" — it's picking based on the primary use case. A living room where the TV is the centerpiece and music is secondary is a strong soundbar case. A dedicated listening space, a home office, or a setup where music quality genuinely matters day to day tends to favor bookshelf speakers, even with the added setup step.
Some buyers split the difference with a soundbar for TV and a separate pair of powered bookshelf speakers for music in another room — which sidesteps the debate entirely rather than resolving it.
A high-end soundbar can sound very good, but physical stereo separation generally gives bookshelf speakers an edge for accurate music imaging that a single-enclosure soundbar has to simulate rather than physically produce.
Passive bookshelf speakers do — they need a receiver or external amp. Powered bookshelf speakers, which include a built-in amplifier, don't require a separate component, closing much of the setup gap with soundbars.
Dolby Atmos-capable soundbars use upward-firing drivers to bounce sound off the ceiling, creating a sense of height and overhead sound without physical speakers mounted above the listener — a real technical feature, not just a spec-sheet buzzword.
Many soundbar systems are designed to expand this way, and it's a legitimate way to build toward a fuller surround setup over time without starting from a full separates-based system.
