From a post-9/11 release delay to an Adults Only rating to a Netflix-exclusive trailer — six real years, six real backdrops.
🕰️

Quick take

  • GTA III wasn't pulled from shelves after 9/11 — it hadn't shipped yet. Rockstar delayed it three weeks and made real, specific edits (repainted police cars, changed flight paths, new box art) before its October 2001 release.
  • San Andreas' Hot Coffee scandal is the franchise's most serious controversy: a modder unlocked existing sexual content in June 2005, the ESRB re-rated the game Adults Only that July, major retailers pulled it, and it ended in a $20M+ shareholder settlement in 2009.
  • GTA IV set three Guinness World Records for revenue and sales speed in a single day in 2008 — the same year the global financial crisis began, a backdrop the game's own story leaned into.
  • GTA V is the second-best-selling video game ever, with 230+ million copies shipped since 2013 and roughly $10 billion in lifetime revenue.
  • GTA VI's "Extended Look" trailer became the first major game trailer to premiere as a Netflix exclusive, pulling 31.1 million Netflix views in its first four days — a genuinely new kind of pre-release cultural event for the medium.

Grand Theft Auto III

Released: Oct. 23, 2001 (PS2)  ·  Developer: DMA Design → Rockstar North  ·  First-year sales: 6M+ copies, $250M+

GTA III hadn't shipped yet when the September 11 attacks happened — so the popular version of this story, "pulled from shelves after 9/11," isn't quite what occurred. What actually happened: on September 19, 2001, Rockstar president Sam Houser publicly confirmed a three-week delay, pushing the release from an original early-October date to October 23. In that window, Rockstar reviewed the game and made specific, targeted changes because of the attacks — repainting police cars from an NYPD-style blue-and-white livery to a generic black-and-white scheme, altering flight paths so aircraft no longer appeared to fly toward or behind skyscrapers, removing a mission reference to terrorism, adjusting some dialogue, and replacing box art judged "too raw" for the moment.

Rockstar's own framing: the studio characterized the total edits as making the game "about 1% different" from what had been finished before the attacks — a small but deliberate set of changes, not a wholesale rewrite.

Once it landed, GTA III became the best-selling game of 2001 in the US and effectively invented the modern open-world genre — DMA Design was renamed Rockstar North that same year, closing one era of the studio's history and opening the next in the same twelve months. It tied Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 as the highest-rated PS2 game on Metacritic (97/100) and was the first game to earn a "Diamond" sales award in the UK.

2002

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Released: Oct. 29, 2002 (PS2)  ·  Developer: Rockstar North  ·  Launch: 500K copies in 24 hours, 1.4M in 2 days

Vice City sold 1.4 million copies in its first 48 hours — the fastest-selling game of its time — and became 2002's best-selling US title. Producer Leslie Benzies described the intended tone plainly: "a party town, all sun and sea and sex, but with that same dark edge underneath." Getting there took real research trips to Miami, roughly 8,000 lines of recorded dialogue (about four times GTA III's script), and 113-plus licensed songs across nine hours of in-game radio.

The controversy came later, not at launch: in November 2003 — more than a year after release — Haitian-American advocacy groups protested the game's depiction of Haitian gang characters, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg publicly threatened legal action. Rockstar apologized and removed the offending dialogue from later printings. It's a real controversy, but a mid-life-cycle one — not something that happened at the game's actual 2002 launch.
2004

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Released: Oct. 26, 2004 (PS2)  ·  Developer: Rockstar North  ·  First week: 4.5M copies, $235M (US)

San Andreas is the best-selling PlayStation 2 game ever made — 27.5 million-plus copies over its lifetime — and set a real Guinness World Record for the most credited actors in a single video game: 861, with over 400 speaking roles and more than 60,000 lines of dialogue, 7,700 of them for protagonist CJ alone. Sam Houser explained the setting's appeal directly: "We love L.A., and the whole gangbanging vibe, and the street culture."

None of that is the reason most people remember San Andreas, though. That's Hot Coffee — the franchise's single most consequential controversy, and one worth getting exactly right rather than repeating the shorthand version:

DateWhat happened
Jun. 9, 2005Modder Patrick Wildenborg releases a PC patch unlocking sexual content that existed on the disc but had been disabled by developers — downloaded 1M+ times in four weeks.
Jul. 8, 2005ESRB opens a formal investigation.
Jul. 20, 2005ESRB re-rates the game from "Mature" to "Adults Only" — the only mainline GTA to ever carry that rating. Major retailers (Walmart, Target, Best Buy) pull it immediately.
Jul. 28, 2005The U.S. House votes 355–21 to direct an FTC investigation.
Jun. 8, 2006FTC settles with Take-Two over a disclosure-requirement violation.
Jan. 28, 2008A consumer class-action settles; affected buyers become eligible for $35 each.
Sep. 2, 2009A separate shareholder lawsuit against Take-Two settles for $20M+.

The content existed in fully-rendered form on every disc — it wasn't fabricated by the mod, only unlocked by it — which is precisely why the ESRB treated it as a rating-accuracy failure rather than a modder's invention. Rockstar and Take-Two later released a patched version restoring the standard "M" rating.

2008

Grand Theft Auto IV

Released: Apr. 29, 2008 (PS3/Xbox 360)  ·  Developer: Rockstar North  ·  24-hour sales: 3.6M copies, $310M
Sony PlayStation 3 console with DualShock 3 controller

GTA IV picked up three Guinness World Records on a single day — May 13, 2008 — for highest-grossing video game in 24 hours, highest revenue by any entertainment product in 24 hours, and fastest-selling video game in 24 hours. Getting Liberty City's redesign right meant the dev team shot an estimated 100,000 to 250,000 reference photographs of real New York City streets. Producer Leslie Benzies later called the game's multiplayer component "the hardest part of the game's development."

The record-breaking launch landed in the same year the global financial crisis began — Bear Stearns collapsed in March, Lehman Brothers in September, five months after release — and GTA IV's own story, following an Eastern European immigrant chasing the American Dream into disillusionment, sits uncomfortably close to that backdrop without ever directly referencing it. It's a real coincidence of timing rather than a documented creative response, worth noting as atmosphere rather than causation.

2013

Grand Theft Auto V

Released: Sep. 17, 2013 (PS3/Xbox 360)  ·  Developer: Rockstar North  ·  3-day sales: $1 billion

GTA V made $800 million on its first day and crossed $1 billion in three — at the time, the fastest any entertainment product in history had reached that mark. It's since shipped 230-million-plus copies and generated close to $10 billion in lifetime revenue, making it the second-best-selling video game of all time. The three-protagonist structure had actually been considered as far back as San Andreas' development, but shelved because the hardware of that era couldn't support it — it only became technically feasible with the PS3/Xbox 360 generation.

Real controversy, not manufactured: a GameSpot review by critic Carolyn Petit noting the game's "profound and sometimes troubling misogyny" drew roughly 20,000 hostile user comments and a petition demanding her removal. Separately, in December 2014, Target Australia and Kmart pulled the game after a 40,000-plus-signature petition over its depiction of violence against women — Take-Two's COO said the company remained committed to the game as released.

GTA V's decade-plus tail is itself part of the story: PS4/Xbox One (2014), Windows (2015), and a PS5/Xbox Series X|S re-release (March 2022) kept it commercially active for nearly the entire gap until GTA VI.

2026

Grand Theft Auto VI

Arrives: Nov. 19, 2026 (PS5, incl. PS5 Pro; Xbox Series X|S — no PC)  ·  Developer: Rockstar Games  ·  First trailer: Dec. 2023
Sony PlayStation 5 console with DualSense controller

GTA VI's cultural footprint started building nearly three years before its release date, and it's already set records no previous GTA game had the internet infrastructure to attempt. Its first trailer, released in December 2023, hit 60 million YouTube views in 12 hours and passed 120 million within 72 — breaking MrBeast's prior record for the most-viewed non-music video in a single day (59.4 million).

The genuinely new part: on August 27, 2026, Rockstar premiered its 27-minute "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" as a Netflix-exclusive special at 3pm ET, with a six-hour window before it went wide on YouTube. Between that Thursday and the following Sunday, it drew 31.1 million Netflix views and topped Netflix's English-language film chart in 87 of 93 tracked countries — the first time a game trailer has been distributed as co-branded streaming-platform programming rather than purely as a YouTube upload.

The release date itself has moved twice — originally targeted for 2025, pushed to May 2026, then to its current November 19, 2026 date, confirmed by Rockstar in November 2025. Whatever else happens between now and launch, GTA VI has already done something none of its five predecessors did: become a cultural event before a single unit has shipped.

Common questions

Was GTA III really pulled from shelves after 9/11?

No — it hadn't been released yet. Rockstar delayed the launch three weeks and made specific edits before it shipped in October 2001.

What exactly was Hot Coffee?

Sexual content that existed on San Andreas' discs but was disabled by developers. A 2005 mod unlocked it, leading the ESRB to re-rate the game Adults Only — the only mainline GTA to carry that rating.

Which GTA game sold the most?

GTA V, with 230+ million copies shipped since 2013 — the second-best-selling video game of all time.

Is GTA VI's Netflix trailer thing actually unprecedented?

Yes, as far as major game marketing goes — it's the first time a trailer premiered as Netflix-exclusive programming with its own time-limited window before going wide.

Has GTA VI's release date changed?

Yes, twice — from an original 2025 target to May 2026, then to the current November 19, 2026 date, confirmed by Rockstar in November 2025.

Where this leaves it

Some of these backdrops shaped the games directly — Hot Coffee is inseparable from San Andreas' history now. Others are coincidence of timing that happened to land in the same twelve months, like GTA IV and the financial crisis. Both are worth knowing, but they're not the same kind of fact, and this piece tried to keep them from blurring together.
