The Best Mustang of Every Modern Generation

Four generations, four top dogs — picked from under the fender, not behind the wheel.

GB By Güero & Bullseye, Legit Car Desk  |  Updated Sep 14, 2026

Güero and Bullseye are the shop cats. They don't drive anything — they're cats — but they've been asleep on the fender through more Mustang diagnoses than anyone else on this desk, and this is their first byline.

From the fender, not the driver's seat We're cats. We've never driven any of these, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Every horsepower figure, price, and spec below is the manufacturer's own published number for that model year. What we bring is a couple thousand hours of watching these things get worked on up close. Figures noted are historical MSRP at launch, not current market value — these are old cars now, and prices move.

Four generations of Mustang have come through since the 2005 relaunch, and each one had a real top dog — the trim that made everything else in the lineup look like it was there to sell financing. This is that car, once per generation, picked on real numbers.

GEN 1S197 · 2005–2009

2007 Shelby GT500

2007-2009 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, exterior shot.
The one that brought the name back.
$42,975 MSRP (coupe) / $47,800 (convertible)
500 hp 480 lb-ft Supercharged 5.4L V8 6-speed manual 0–60 in 4.5s

First modern GT500 since 1970, and the first supercharged V8 Mustang Ford had built in decades. 500 hp and 480 lb-ft out of a 5.4-liter twin-cam V8 doesn't sound like much next to what came after, but in 2007 it was the most power a factory Mustang had ever carried — and the one that proved Ford was serious about doing the Shelby name right again, not just slapping stripes on a badge.

2013 Shelby GT500

2013-2014 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, exterior shot.
662 horsepower and still got 24 mpg highway.
$54,200 MSRP (coupe) / $59,200 (convertible)
662 hp 631 lb-ft Supercharged 5.8L V8 6-speed manual 0–60 in 3.5s

This is the one that got genuinely silly. 662 horsepower from a 5.8-liter supercharged V8, officially certified — the most powerful production V8 in the world at the time it launched, from a company that also sold you an F-150. Ford's own numbers put 202 mph on the table, and somehow it still carried an EPA highway rating of 24 mpg. Nobody in the shop has ever agreed on whether that's more impressive than the horsepower number.

2020 Shelby GT500

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, exterior shot in Grabber Lime.
The most powerful Ford ever built, full stop.
$73,995 MSRP (coupe, incl. gas-guzzler tax and destination)
760 hp 625 lb-ft Supercharged 5.2L V8 7-speed dual-clutch 0–60 in 3.3s

760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft from a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 — not just the most powerful Mustang Ford had built, but the most powerful production Ford of any kind, ever, at launch. The 6-speed manual got dropped for a 7-speed Tremec dual-clutch here, which caused arguments in the shop that are, as of this writing, unresolved. Sub-11-second quarter mile from the factory, no aftermarket work required.

2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC

The GTD's engine, in a car you can actually buy.
$106,090 MSRP
795 hp Supercharged 5.2L V8 7-speed dual-clutch Carbon-fiber driveshaft Shares engine with Mustang GTD

There's no GT500 in the current lineup — this generation's flagship is the Dark Horse SC, and per Ford's own published specs it runs 795 horsepower from a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 shared directly with the Mustang GTD supercar, paired with a 7-speed Tremec dual-clutch and a carbon-fiber driveshaft. At $106,090 MSRP, it's also the first regular-production Mustang to cross into six figures. Ford says it was developed alongside the GTD and GT3 race cars at Sebring and VIR — genuine motorsport lineage, not a marketing line, for once.

Why not the Boss 302s, the California Specials, the Bullitts?

Every generation had good cars that aren't on this list — the Boss 302, the Mach 1, the various Bullitts and California Specials all had real fans in the shop. This list is specifically the highest-output, top-of-lineup Shelby (or Shelby-adjacent) trim per generation, because that's the cleanest, least arguable way to pick one car per era without turning this into a much longer list. The Boss and Mach 1 cars are a different conversation — ask us again sometime and we might actually agree on an answer.

"We've seen every one of these on a lift. Never once behind the wheel."Güero & Bullseye, Legit Car Desk

Four generations, four different engineering answers to the same question — and the number never stopped going up. 500 hp in 2007 to 795 hp in 2026, and somehow the manual transmission is the thing that actually went away.
