The first cordless tool you buy quietly picks every later one, because the battery and charger only fit one family. So choose the platform first, then the kit. Here are 14 well-reviewed Amazon starter listings organized by platform: combo kits, single tools, and battery starters.
How to choose a battery platform
- Choose the battery family first. A battery pack and charger only fit one brand's tools, so every later bare tool you buy ties you to that family. Tool-retail guides we read make the same point: do not ask which platform is best in the abstract; start from the tools you will actually use (DataPower guide).
- Judge a platform by the tools you will really buy. That same guide advises weighing whether the range has your tools rather than counting how many products it lists. Ryobi, for one, states on its own kit page that over 175 ONE+ tools are built to run on any ONE+ 18V battery (Ryobi kit page).
- Do not trust voltage as a compatibility test. DeWalt's combo-kit page footnotes that its 20V MAX label means 20 volts maximum initial voltage and 18 volts nominal (DeWalt kit page). Names like 20V MAX, V20, LXT and ONE+ describe a system, not a universal standard.
- Look at amp-hours as runtime, not power. A bigger pack runs longer but adds weight. The DataPower guide cautions against assuming the biggest battery is best because it can unbalance a compact tool.
- A two-battery kit saves interruptions. You use one while the other charges. Compare the kit contents on the listing: batteries, charger and bag are not always included.
- Battery-only and charger-only packs are only for matching platforms. We include them here only where the listing title states the platform. Always match the platform name before you click buy.
- Read the manual and wear eye protection. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for each tool, and use eye protection whenever you drill, drive or cut. Check manufacturer guidance and any recall notices for the exact model you buy.

Craftsman's V20 line is sold as a 20V MAX system, so as with DeWalt it is worth confirming battery fit by platform name rather than by voltage.

Honest limits
Ridgid and Skil have extensive 18V and 20V ranges, but none of their Amazon kits we checked met our bar, so we left them out rather than pad the list. Bosch has one entry for the same reason. Kit contents and battery sizes change between listing versions, so reread the listing before you order. Milwaukee availability and sellers vary.
