Why this matters in a sale season
A low price is only a good deal if you can undo the purchase or claim a later drop. Retailers write these rules in different places and at different times, and many holiday terms depend on the date you buy. Everything below is what each retailer's own policy page said as read on Nov 4, 2026. Policies change, so confirm on the retailer's page before you rely on one. When a page would not open, this article says to check the retailer's page rather than guess.

A price-match policy and a price-adjustment policy are different things: a match compares you to another price at checkout, while an adjustment refunds you the difference after you buy.
What to do if the price drops after you buy
If the price drops after you buy: five steps.
- Note the date you bought or received the item. Several policies count from receipt, not order.
- Read the retailer's own policy for your date, using the table above as a guide.
- Check whether the new price is an ordinary price drop or a special-event price. Apple and Walmart in stores exclude Black Friday prices; Best Buy excludes competitors' Black Friday pricing from its match.
- Ask for the adjustment with proof: Target and Best Buy ask for the lower price live, and Target does not accept screenshots.
- If it is refused and you are still inside the return window, compare the hassle and any fees of returning and rebuying.
Keep your proof. Almost every policy above asks for something you must have on hand: a receipt or order number, the original packaging and accessories, or the lower price shown live on the retailer's site or app. Save your order confirmation in an email folder, keep the box until the window closes, and write down the last day to return each item. A calendar reminder a few days before the deadline is usually enough.
Retailer notes worth knowing
Best Buy says its extended holiday returns cover most items bought Oct 30 through Dec 31, 2026, with exclusions for items bought with a third-party contract, such as activatable phones and AppleCare+ plans, and for holiday decorations. Its page lists some categories that carry restocking fees and some items that cannot be returned once purchased, so read it before you buy a drone, camera or projector.
Target sets different holiday return deadlines by category: electronics by Jan 24, 2027, and Apple, Beats and phones by Jan 8, 2027, on purchases from Nov 1 to Dec 24. Its holiday price-match page asks for proof of purchase and does not accept screenshots or pictures of the lower price.
Costco's price-adjustment page says it will deny requests at its sole discretion and may restrict the policy later. It says it does not match other retailers.
Apple's 14-day window is short, and its price protection page states that special sales events such as Black Friday are excluded. Wireless service cancellation is separate: Apple says returning an iPhone or iPad may not cancel your carrier account.
Walmart lists a 90-day window for most items, with shorter windows for electronics, wireless phones and major appliances. Its price-match policy page is dated 2023, so check it again before relying on it.
