Tech gifts worth putting on your list before Black Friday

Ten real gift types, who each is for, the catch, and what to buy instead. No deal claims.

Short answer

Earbuds, power banks, smart plugs, trackers, an e-reader and a streaming box make solid tech gifts if they match what the recipient already owns. Check the phone and ports first, since several makers' pages describe only their own ecosystem. We list no prices; see the current price on Amazon.

What this article isA research-based roundup built from the makers' own pages we opened. We did not test or own these products, and we state only what those pages say. Check compatibility and current models before buying.

A good tech gift is one the recipient can use on day one, with the phone and TV they already have. These ten gift types are real, widely sold products whose makers' own pages we opened on Nov 4, 2026. We name no prices and make no deal claims; the button on each card goes to an Amazon search so you can see the current price there. Black Friday is Fri Nov 27 and Cyber Monday is Mon Nov 30, 2026, and retailer sale dates are still being announced, so see dates by retailer.

First: check compatibility

Most returns of tech gifts trace back to one mismatch, so check the phone first. This graphic summarizes what the maker pages say, not a promise that anything works.

What phone do they use? An Apple phone AirPods lineup, AirTag,Apple TV 4K, Apple Watch:Apple's pages describeApple devices only Android or not sure Power banks, e-readers, smartplugs: check ports, apps andthe store's compatibility listbefore you buy

The ten

1. Wireless earbuds

What is verified: Apple's AirPods page lists AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro 3, and says AirPods Pro 3 is marketed as having the strongest noise cancellation of the lineup.

Who it is for: Someone who commutes, works out or takes calls, and uses Apple devices.

The catch: The Apple page we read describes Apple devices only and does not say whether any model works with Android, so confirm that before buying for a non-Apple phone.

What to buy or do instead: Other brands make earbuds too. Read our earbud guide and how earbuds work first.

2. Over-ear noise-canceling headphones

What is verified: Apple lists AirPods Max 2 and says all three AirPods models have active noise cancellation.

Who it is for: A frequent flyer, an open-office worker, or anyone who wants comfort over compactness.

The catch: Same compatibility caveat as the earbuds above, and over-ear sets are bulkier to carry.

What to buy or do instead: Compare against other makers in our travel headphone guide and noise-canceling headphones.

3. Pocket or magnetic power bank

What is verified: Anker's power bank page groups products by capacity (under 10,000, 10,000 to 21,000, and over 21,000 milliamp-hours), lists a slim pocket size around 5,000, and lists Qi2 wireless and magnetic packs that attach to compatible phones.

Who it is for: Anyone whose phone dies before the day does, or who travels.

The catch: A magnetic pack only attaches to compatible phones, and capacity numbers are easy to misread.

What to buy or do instead: Check the port type on the recipient's phone and read what mAh actually means and portable chargers for travel.

4. Laptop-class power bank

What is verified: The same Anker page lists high-capacity packs, including a 25,000 milliamp-hour laptop power bank rated at 165 watts, and describes the high-capacity group as suited to laptops.

Who it is for: A remote worker, student or traveler who charges a laptop away from outlets.

The catch: Larger than a pocket pack, and you should check the airline's rules before flying with one.

What to buy or do instead: Read portable chargers and TSA carry-on rules, and confirm the laptop's charging requirement first.

5. Smart plug

What is verified: Kasa's page lists a Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini, a Plug Slim line (the only ones labeled "with Energy Monitoring"), and says you can manage devices from a smartphone. It shows a Matter filter but does not say which models support it.

Who it is for: A first smart-home gift: lamps, holiday lights, a coffee maker with a physical switch.

The catch: The page does not say which voice assistants work, so check the product page and the recipient's setup before buying.

What to buy or do instead: See smart plugs for a first smart home and, for Apple households, the HomeView FAQ.

6. Smart power strip

What is verified: Kasa lists power strips, one with six outlets and one with three, alongside its plugs.

Who it is for: A desk or entertainment center where several things need separate scheduling.

The catch: The page we read lists only outlet counts, so check the product page for which features each strip has.

What to buy or do instead: A single smart plug may cover the real need.

7. Item tracker

What is verified: Apple's AirTag page says it is found through the Find My app, uses a replaceable coin cell battery that Apple says lasts more than a year, and requires a recent iPhone or iPad software version and an Apple Account.

Who it is for: Someone who loses keys, bags or luggage, and has an iPhone.

The catch: The page does not describe setting up or locating an AirTag from Android. Android phones will alert you if an unknown AirTag travels with you, and Apple says those alerts only trigger when a tag is separated from its owner.

What to buy or do instead: Check what the recipient's phone supports before buying any tracker.

8. Apple TV 4K streaming box

What is verified: Apple says it streams shows, movies, games and workouts, includes Siri microphones in the remote, and can serve as a home hub for Matter accessories. Some services require subscriptions.

Who it is for: An Apple household that wants one box for streaming and smart home control.

The catch: Subscriptions are separate, and the page ties some Siri features to a recent iPhone or iPad.

What to buy or do instead: If the TV already has a built-in streaming system, a separate box may not add much.

9. E-reader

What is verified: Amazon's listing for Kindle Paperwhite describes a 7-inch glare-free display and weeks of battery life.

Who it is for: A heavy reader, a traveler, or someone who reads in bed.

The catch: Libraries and file formats differ by device, so check how the recipient gets books.

What to buy or do instead: Read e-readers for library borrowing before you pick one.

10. Smartwatch

What is verified: Apple's shop page lists Series 12, Ultra 4 and SE 3 models in a comparison.

Who it is for: Someone who wants notifications, fitness data and a phone-free glance at the day.

The catch: Needs charging, and you must confirm it pairs with the recipient's phone. The Apple page we opened did not detail compatibility.

What to buy or do instead: A plain fitness band can be enough: see fitness trackers with no subscription and Apple Watch dock accessories.

Questions and answers

Do AirPods work with Android phones?

Apple's AirPods page we read does not say. Its compatibility notes mention only Apple devices, so check before buying for an Android user.

Can an AirTag be used with an Android phone?

Apple's page does not describe setting up or finding an AirTag from Android. It says Android phones will alert you if an unknown AirTag travels with you.

What does mAh mean on a power bank?

It is a capacity rating in milliamp-hours. Anker groups its power banks as under 10,000, 10,000 to 21,000, and over 21,000, with the largest suited to laptops.

What is a Qi2 or magnetic power bank?

Anker lists Qi2 wireless packs and magnetic packs that attach to compatible phones. Confirm the recipient's phone is compatible before choosing one.

Can I take a big power bank on a plane?

Check the airline's rules first. Our TSA carry-on charger guide is a starting point.

Do smart plugs need a hub?

Kasa's page says devices are managed from a smartphone and does not mention a hub. Check the specific product page for voice assistant and Matter support.

What is Matter in smart home gear?

It is a smart home standard. Apple's Apple TV page says Matter accessories require a home hub, such as an Apple TV 4K, HomePod or HomeView.

Does a smart plug track energy use?

Only some do. Kasa labels its Plug Slim models as having energy monitoring, and the other plugs on its page are not labeled that way.

Does Apple TV 4K need a subscription?

The device does not, per Apple's page, but Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Arcade and Apple Fitness+ do. Some Siri features also need a recent iPhone or iPad.

Is a Kindle a good gift for someone who borrows library books?

It depends on the library and the device. Read our e-readers for library borrowing guide to check how each device gets books.

Which Apple Watch models are there?

Apple's shop page, as of Nov 4, 2026, lists Series 12, Ultra 4 and SE 3. Check the shop page for current models.

Should I buy tech gifts before Black Friday?

We cannot say whether any product will be marked down, and we found no source that promises it. Buy early if the recipient needs it for a date and the return window covers the holidays; check the seller's return rules.
