Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days ran Oct 6-7, 2026 and are over. The next big shopping dates on the calendar are Black Friday (Nov 27) and Cyber Monday (Nov 30). If you need a screen, a laptop or a pair of earbuds, should you buy this week or hold out? The honest answer differs by category, and it depends more on where a product is in its life cycle than on any single event.
How to use this guide
- Find your category in the cheat-sheet table, then read its section for the reasoning.
- Each section ends with a one-line rule: buy now if, wait if.
- Where outlets disagree or are silent, we say so rather than guess.
The one rule: product cycle beats the calendar
Most shopping-event advice boils down to "wait, it will be cheaper." That is only sometimes true, and it ignores the cost of waiting: weeks without a device you need, and the risk that the exact model sells out or changes. Three questions settle most decisions:

- Does the item have a successor coming soon? If so, the older model is the one that tends to be cleared out, and waiting for a new model rarely makes the current one cheaper in a way you can plan around.
- Does the seller control the price? NBC Select points out that Amazon sells and prices its own devices, which is why it advises buying those at Amazon's events (see below). Third-party brands are set by many retailers, and November brings more of them into play.
- Do you need it before the dates? A laptop for a semester that has already started is a different decision from a spare TV for a guest room.
Our read: a good product at a fair price that you need now beats a hypothetical better one in four weeks. Waiting is the right call only when you can name a reason, such as an imminent successor or an outlet advising it for that category.
What the outlets say, category by category
Coverage is uneven. NBC Select's October what-to-buy-and-skip guide is the most direct source and covers TVs, laptops, consoles, tablets, smart home, Amazon devices and headphones, but not phones or monitors. PCWorld's early-October tech roundup is built around specific picks and adds useful caveats for accessories and Amazon gear. NerdWallet's October Prime Day page was readable only in its introduction for us, where the author describes buying only items he would purchase anyway; we cannot attribute category advice to it. We could not read RTINGS or Tom's Guide pages for this edition, so they are not cited.

TVs
NBC Select advises skipping TVs at the October event and waiting for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, because those November events tend to be stronger for big-ticket items. TV model years also turn over on a predictable rhythm, so a prior-year set is often a fine buy. Before you buy anything, decide on panel type; our OLED vs mini-LED vs QLED explainer covers that.
Laptops and tablets
NBC Select also says to hold laptops for Black Friday, citing broader selection, but says to buy Amazon's own tablets at the October event. PCWorld's picks include a mini PC and a portable monitor, and it calls the Fire HD 10 an entry-level tablet that is a poor fit for heavy multitasking, demanding games or frequent photography. For students, timing is often set by the school year; see best laptops for college, and for gaming machines best gaming laptops. For drawing and notes, tablets for note-taking is the relevant guide, and if you are weighing a small desktop, our Mac mini guide is there too.
Headphones and earbuds
NBC Select advises buying earbuds and headphones from major brands (it names Apple, Sony, Bose and Beats) at the October event. Our own page on Apple's September 9 event states that AirPods 5 bring noise cancellation to the open-ear design for the first time and was released September 18. Our read: if you are an Apple user eyeing AirPods, the new model is already out, so you are choosing between a new generation and a prior one, not waiting on a rumor. For other brands, compare features first: noise-canceling headphones and wireless earbuds for everyday use.
Phones, chargers and power banks
Neither NBC Select nor PCWorld gives phone buying advice in the pages we read. The cycle is the useful guide. According to our Apple September 2026 event recap, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max were released Sept. 18, and the foldable iPhone Duo ships Oct. 23. Our read: for iPhone buyers, the new generation is now the current one and last year's models are the older ones; there is no new iPhone event to wait for before November. Accessories are a separate story. PCWorld's list is full of them and flags the trade-offs: a 45W power bank shares its output across ports, so charging several devices at once slows each, and a docking station shares charging output across its ports. Read what power-bank mAh means, portable chargers for travel and USB-C hubs before choosing by headline wattage.
Smart home and Amazon devices (Kindle, Echo, Fire TV, Ring)
This is the category where NBC Select is most confident: buy Amazon's own devices, including Echo, Ring and Blink, plus smart plugs, at Amazon's events, because Amazon runs the event and sells the hardware. PCWorld adds practical caveats: the Ring Battery Doorbell 2K needs to be taken off the wall for recharging every one to three months, and the Echo Show 11 acts as a control hub for Alexa-compatible cameras, thermostats and lights. Our read: because Amazon sets those prices and runs repeated events, passing on one is low-risk, but if the device solves a problem today there is little reason to hold out. Before buying a camera or doorbell, check running costs in smart video doorbells and start small with smart plugs for a first smart home. For reading, see e-readers for library borrowing.
Game consoles and handhelds
NBC Select advises skipping consoles in October and waiting for the November events. We found no other named outlet with console timing advice, so this rests on one source. Our read: consoles are gift-season products, so if the buyer is a gift giver, the November window is the natural one; if you play now, buy now. Desk gear is easier to time. See gaming chairs.
Monitors and keyboards
The outlets we read give no category verdict. PCWorld notes a portable monitor is aimed at laptop and handheld-gaming users, comes from a budget brand, and ships with only a USB-C charging cable, no video cables. Accessories like these are easy to get wrong, so plan the whole setup first with the multi-monitor home-office guide and best keyboards and the desk setup.

A checklist before you pay

- Is a successor announced or clearly due? Check the maker's own announcements.
- Is the seller Amazon itself, a brand, or a marketplace third party? Confirm who ships and handles returns.
- Have you checked the return window, especially for gifts bought early?
- Does it work with what you own (ports, wattage, voice assistant, subscription)?
- Are you buying a bundle? Judge each piece on its own; a bundle is only useful if you wanted every item in it.
- For November: read the retailer's announcement for what is included and when. Black Friday is Nov 27 and Cyber Monday is Nov 30, 2026, but what any store offers is the store's call, and no price drop is guaranteed.
